Progress of works

Recent works include:

Concourse
  • Lightning truss has been erected 
  • Installation of fare gates is complete 
  • Floortiling almost complete
  • Installation of the ceiling nearly complete
  • Escalator has been installed  


Platforms

  • Floortiling almost complete 
  • Majority of bulk head ceilings complete 
  • Lifts are currently being installed 
  • Passenger Information Display Systems structure is ready for installation 
  • Commenced installation of 2 lifts 


Mezzanine

  • The mezzanine level has been completed and handed over to QR

  • Hoardings have been removed and replaced with fencing on the concourse level
  • Concourse is due to be completed by the end of July
  • Mezzanine level (facilities room, offices) will be finished in early August
  • The ceiling on platforms 1 and 2 is progressing well
  • Cladding of the escalator walls is complete
  • Installation of the escalators is due to begin in early July
  • Installation of the lifts is due to begin later this month

  • Framing for ticketing office complete and wiring and cabling is being installed
  • One ticket counter is installed. Two more are still to be installed
  • Erection of the steel structure for the mezzanine is in progress

  • Framing for the rooms on the Platforms 3 & 4 is well advanced and internal finishes are being applied
  • The ceiling structure is practically completed

  • The escalator has been erected
  • Lift installation has commenced

  • The concourse level floor is being removed to form the opening for the escalator
  • The emergency egress is being used for construction access

Project Overview

Brunswick Street rail station is to be upgraded to meet accessibility standards and to provide a substantial refurbishment.

The station was built more than 30 years ago and the redevelopment will be extremely complex and have significant impacts on passengers and the surrounding business and residential community.

Features will include:

  • Lift and escalator access to all platforms
  • New emergency egress
  • Ceiling throughout the platform level
  • Brighter lighting
  • New toilets
  • Surface treatments to platforms/building
  • New seating
  • Improved information and signage     

Progress of works

Recent works include:

  • The ceilings and associated fixtures on Platforms 3 and 4 have been removed.
  • Most of the buildings on Platforms 3 and 4 and the ramp leading to the platforms have been demolished.
  • Work trans have regularly arrived at night and removed demolished materials.
  • Hoarding has been erected at the concourse level entry to Platforms 3 and 4.
  • The only entry to the station is now through the side entrance, opposite Foodworks in the Valley Metro Centre.
  • In preparation for demolition at the concourse level, the disabled toilet has been relocated nearby.  

Upcoming works

  • The emergency escape bridge over the track nearest Alden Street (adjacent to Platform 1 will soon be complete).  This bridge will be used for construction access until project completion when it will be opened as the public emergency escape bridge.
  • Erection of structural steel to support the ceiling.
  • Continuing demolition on the platforms and concourse.     

As at 13 July 2007

Last fortnight’s progress of works

  • Bridge cadding has been added to the side of the emergency escape bridge.
  • A work train used the station last Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning to deliver the hoarding material for the start of construction.
  • A temporary station master’s office has been established at the Bowen Hills end of Platforms 1 & 2.   

Friday 13 July

  • Platforms 3 & 4 will be closed as of 8pm, Friday 13 July.
  • The first work undertaken will be to disconnect the permanent power supply and install the construction power supply.
  • Demolition of ceiling and lights along the edges of Platforms 3 & 4 will occur before the hoarding is erected on the morning of Saturday 14 July.  

Upcoming works

  • QR is removing equipment from Platforms 3 & 4 on the weekend of 14 – 15 July. This includes removal of train information display screens, CCTV cameras and other telecommunication equipment.
  • Relocation of a signal will occur on the weekend of 14 – 15 July.
  • On Sunday 15 July a work train will arrive at Brunswick Street to remove demolished ceiling material.
  • Possessions and isolations will occur over the next two weeks to complete the installation of the hoarding on Platforms 3 & 4.
  • Hoarding will be erected at the concourse level of the station on Friday 20 July. Following this, the demolition of buildings on Platforms 3 & 4 will take place.    

As at 30 June 2007

  • Steel is being assembled next to Platform 1 in preparation for the erection of the emergency escape bridge on the weekend of 30 June – 1 July.
  • This weekend there will also be closures of the tracks adjacent to Platforms 1 and 2. All trains will be diverted through to Platforms 3 and 4 and times for these trains will not change.
  • QR is taking advantage of these closures to work on the tunnels between Brunswick Street and Central stations.
  • Preparatory works, including demolition of a wall, will occur at the Central Station end of Platforms 3 and 4 at Brunswick Street Station on 30 June - 1 July. This will allow access to unused areas of the platform for storage of construction materials.
  • There will also be a ramp constructed the same weekend allowing construction staff access from the platforms to ground level at the Bowen Hills end of Platforms 3 and 4.
  • On the weekend of 7 - 8 July another closure of the track adjacent to Platform 1 will occur for further erection of structural steel and panelling of the emergency escape bridge. This will be followed by erection of a stair structure in the week beginning 9 July.
  • On the night of 10 July, hoarding materials will be delivered in preparation for the closures of Platforms 3 and 4 on 14 July.  

As at 15 June 2007

Construction of the new fire escape has started with fencing erected on the outside of Platform 1, near Alden Street around the footings of the escape. This will provide construction access throughout the project. Passengers can expect to see hoarding in this location in late June. 

Preparatory work on rail infrastructure has commenced including relocation of signals and communications, modification of overhead wiring, and temporary access to the track. 

Bovis Lend Lease has assembled its construction offices on the north side of the Valley Metro Centre, under the carpark ramp.
