What is an unaccompanied child
Any child aged 12-15 years travelling alone must be booked as an Unaccompanied child.
Children under the age of 12 years requiring travel will be denied travel unless they are accompanied by a person 16 years old or older who accepts full responsibility for the child during the journey.
How to Make an Unaccompanied Minor Booking
Unaccompanied children bookings cannot be made on the internet. They can be made through the Queensland Rail Travel Customer Contact Centre (1800 TRAINS - 1800 872 467), a Travel Centre, ticket office or travel agent.
The following additional details regarding your child’s travel arrangements will need to be provided:
- Child’s name, age and gender
- Proof of age for unaccompanied children may be required to be provided to reservation staff or Onboard Customer Service staff on request. Proof of age can include a student ID card, birth certificate, passport or other documentation from the parent/guardian confirming the child is 12 years of age or older.
- Contact numbers for parents/guardians for the child must be provided
- Any special requirements for the child’s travel ( e.g. allergies, medical conditions)
- Booking details can only be changed by callers who are able to quote the PNR (Reservation Number) advised at the time of making the unaccompanied child booking. For that reason it is important to protect the secrecy of the PNR, and ensure that it is only disclosed to those people authorised to amend the booking.
Important travel information
- Proof of age and ID for unaccompanied children may be required to be provided to Onboard Customer Service staff on request
- Boarding may be refused if this is not provided.
- The child must travel with sufficient food and/or adequate funds for meals and drinks for the journey.
- It is recommended that an adult/guardian remains at the station until the train has departed.
- Unaccompanied children will be allocated into sitting cars next to service cars where possible. This is to assist onboard customer service staff to periodically monitor the customers during their normal duties throughout the journey. This area will not be for exclusive use of unaccompanied children.
- Onboard customer service staff cannot provide continuous monitoring of children and ultimately the child's parent/guardian is responsible for their travel.
- It is also recommended that the adult/guardian meeting the child at the destination station is at the station prior to the scheduled arrival of the train service. Updates on the train arrival times can be accessed by calling the Train Arrivals and Departures number on 1800 803 009 for hourly updates.
Conditions

- Queensland Rail shall not be held responsible for any loss or damage incurred by the child as a result of late boarding or failure to board either at the initial boarding point or at any intermediate stopover point.
- These conditions shall be read in addition to the Queensland Rail Travel’s conditions of carriage and shall in no way alter, waive or modify these conditions. To view Queensland Rail’s Conditions of Carriage, visit www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au
