1. Why is Indooroopilly Station being upgraded?

The Indooroopilly Station Upgrade is a key Queensland Government project being delivered by TransLink and QR to build a better public transport system for South East Queensland.

The station is undergoing a significant upgrade to improve accessibility to the station and provide a modern facility for QR Citytrain passengers. Currently the station has limited accessibility and is in much need of a face-lift.

As it is the busiest station outside of the CBD, with an average of 1700 passengers using the station each peak hour, Indooroopilly is a vital part of the metropolitan rail network.

QR is committed to improving the station for passengers who frequent the station to travel to work, visit the local shops or go to one of the many schools in the area.

2. Who is responsible for the upgrade?

The Queensland Government has given QR Citytrain and TransLink the approval to build a better station for the community and in turn, a better network for South East Queensland.

3. What improvements are being made to the station?

The upgrade will provide a vast improvement to the station for all Indooroopilly passengers particularly for people with disabilities.

Some of the features of the upgrade include:

  • A new concourse level adjacent to the Westminster Road bridge
  • Three lifts and three sets of stairs to the concourse level
  • New toilet facilities
  • Compliant ticket counters at the concourse level
  • Tactile paving
  • New shelters and seats on each island platform
  • TIPS – a train information passenger system where scrolling information is provided
  • Improved CCTV and enhanced lighting
  • A new, kiss and ride zone at Railway Avenue
  • A modern finish to the design elements of the station, including paint and landscape improvements
  • Artwork has been included as a potential design element.

4. Will there be any additional parking?

There will not be any additional general public parking due to space limitations.

5. Will there be a bus interchange?

Due to significant space constraints, there will not be a bus interchange at the station.

6. Where will the entry and exit points to the station be once the project is completed?

Passengers will be able to enter and exit the station from the following locations:

  • Entry to the concourse from the corner of Coonan Street and the Westminster Road bridge via a small ramp
  • A lift and set of stairs from Railway Avenue to the concourse level
  • Two existing subway entries from Coonan Street and Railway Avenue.

7. Why was the corner of Coonan Street and Westminster Road bridge chosen as the entry point for the concourse?

This option was chosen after consideration of more than a dozen alternatives. Many options required columns on the platforms which were not viable due to the narrow width of the platforms at the station. Adequate clearances from the track are required for the safety of passengers on the platforms.

8. When will works be completed?

Works are expected to continue until December 2008.

9. How will the construction be carried out?

Two of the four platforms will be closed at all times during construction. By closing two platforms, the works can be carried out more quickly than alternative methods.

The first impact on passengers will be the closure of Platforms 3 & 4 for six to eight weeks in November 2007. Early in the new year it is expected that these platforms will reopen and Platforms 1 & 2 will close until May 2008.

In May 2008, Platforms 1 & 2 will reopen and Platforms 3 & 4 will close until the end of construction in December 2008.

10. What impacts will this have on passengers?

There will be minimal impacts on QR passengers as all passenger trains will continue to stop at Indooroopilly Station. Passengers will now be using two platforms instead of all four platforms for boarding and departing trains.

QR will provide additional staff in the initial stages of the project to help to manage crowding on the platforms in peak hours.

The closure of these platforms will require the closure of the same two platforms at nearby stations on the network, including Milton, Auchenflower, Toowong and Taringa. This means when Platforms 1 & 2 close at Indooroopilly, Platforms 1 & 2 will close at the mentioned stations. Again, the same number of services will still operate from these stations each day.

11. How will my journey be affected?

All passenger trains will be diverted through the tracks adjacent to the alternate, open platforms. There will be some changes to train timetables as a result; however these changes are only expected to be minor. The same number of services will still operate from Indooroopilly Station every day.

Passengers are advised to see the updated Beenleigh and Caboolture timetables for your new train times or contact TransLink on 13 12 30.

QR would like to apologise for any inconvenience the upgrade may cause and would like to thank you for your patience as we make these improvements to Indooroopilly Station.

12. Will there be extra noise during construction?

There will be noise resulting from construction at the station however QR will make every effort to minimise impacts on the local community and on passengers.

While noise will occur some nights and weekends, the contractors will, where possible, attempt to work during the day to minimise impacts on nearby residents. Neighbouring residents will be kept informed through noise notices when works are to take place during the night or on weekends.

13. Should I avoid travelling to Indooroopilly Station through construction?

No. Indooroopilly Station will still be operational for the duration of the project and passengers are encouraged to continue to use their station as usual.

14. Where can I find more information?

Posters and flyers will be on display at Indooroopilly Station to inform passengers of the refurbishment and of the platform closures. Passengers are encouraged to ask QR train and station staff for information on platform closures.

Customers can contact TransLink for service times and enquiries on 13 12 30.
