TransLink fares

Calculating TransLink fares
With the introduction of TransLink from 1 July 2004, South East Queensland has been divided into transport zones with the Brisbane CBD at its centre.

Fares are calculated on the number of zones you use in your journey.

You can calculate a fare for a journey using the manual method below however there are a number of online tools available that can calculate the fare for you.

  • For journeys to and from QR Citytrain stations only, you can use the Citytrain online timetable and fare calculator - please see Train timetables & fares.
  • For journeys utilising other forms of public transport such as buses and ferries, please use the fare calculator on the TransLink web site - www.translink.com.au

Zones

The TransLink system operates within 23 zones across south-east Queensland.

Some QR Citytrain stations are located on a zone boundary, so they have two zones (for example, Burpengary is zone 7/8). This means that when you travel towards Brisbane you use the lower zone to calculate your fare and when travelling away from Brisbane you use the higher zone. This ensures you pay the lowest fare.

Some Citytrain stations located in a particular zone have been assigned a different zone number to prevent rail fares from increasing too much.

Find out which zone your station is located in by visting the Station details pages. You can select a station from the Quick Find menu in the right-hand column of this page.

How a TransLink fare is calculated

To calculate your fare, look at the zones you travel in your journey. Subtract the lowest zone you will be travelling in from the highest zone, then add one - this formula calculates the correct number of zones you will be using. Then refer to the fare table below to calculate the cost of your trip.
